When we Trinis talk about drinking a punch, it’s not the alcoholic type punch that is served at weddings and parties (although we drink that type of punch also). To us Trinis, a punch is a non alcoholic milk based drink, flavoured with many different ingredients.
we always had fig (banana) trees around the house and my mother made green fig pie often for us. This was just one of the many different ways she used green fig and whatever produce we had grown around the house.
This punch (banana punch) is made with the ripe bananas and tastes very delicious when blended with the other ingredients. The recipe is my simple way of making this punch, but those punch men who make this on the streets, have their own twist to it. When you’re finished drinking one of their punches “yuh good to go!”
Green fig and saltfish is a simple trini meal I like to partake of once in a while. And, with banana trees in my backyard this dish is always welcome.
Banana bread is a quick bread and also makes for a perfect dessert or even dinner.
Green fig is truly a Caribbean staple. We just can’t do without green bananas in our cooking. We use it in soups with other provision, in drinks, in pies, and now in a salad.
