Aloo Pie: How to Make and Serve this Trinidadian Classic

Aloo pie, a savory pastry, has become an iconic street food in Trinidad and Tobago. This delicious snack consists of a deep-fried dough filled with lightly spiced mashed potatoes and can be found in various food stalls, especially in the bustling capital of Port of Spain. The dish has become so popular that it has even been featured on international food blogs and television shows.

The origins of aloo pie can be traced back to India, where a similar dish called samosas is a popular snack. The recipe for aloo pie was brought to Trinidad and Tobago by Indian immigrants, who arrived on the island in the 19th century to work on sugar plantations. Over time, the recipe has been adapted and modified to suit local taste preferences, resulting in the version that is now enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Aloo pie has become a staple in Trinidadian cuisine and is often served with a variety of chutneys, including tamarind, mango, and pepper sauce, to add an extra kick of flavor.
